As store manager, you oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the gallery/shop/store. You are responsible for people management as well as achieving sales figures and targets. You are also responsible for the retail outlet’s keyholding and security.

You can expect to work on the shop floor when needed (maybe for emergency cover), and you need a thorough understanding of retail, customer service and the sales process.

As manager, you’ll either be responsible for or be involved in creating and managing a team of people to carry out business tasks.
You’ll understand best practice, be able to train new staff members as part of an onboarding process and be extremely knowledgeable in customer service and consumer-rights law.

Experience

To become a gallery, shop or store manager, you need to have worked in the retail sector for several years, specifically in luxury or fashion.


Sales experience is crucial, and having experience in selling luxury products is desirable.

Knowledge

You need to understand the retail business model of buying (and / or making) and selling, running a retail outlet with all the associated costs of a small bricks and mortar business.


Passionate for retail, you have most likely studied and gained accreditations through continuing professional development (CPD) specifically in valuing, gem assessment and retail skills.
